Project Overview
When restoration efforts began on the historic Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center in Walthill, Nebraska, the goal was not only to preserve an important piece of history but also to ensure it could be appreciated long after sunset. McKay Landscape Lighting was selected to design and install a lighting system that would highlight the building’s architecture, improve visitor safety, and respectfully showcase the legacy of one of Nebraska’s influential historical figures.
The project required a thoughtful balance between modern illumination and historic preservation, resulting in a lighting design that enhances the property’s beauty while maintaining its historical integrity.
The Challenge
The Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center occupies a unique place in Nebraska history. Originally opened in 1913 as Memorial Hospital, the building was founded by Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.
As restoration efforts brought new life to the property, the lighting design needed to accomplish several objectives:
- Highlight the building’s historic architectural features
- Improve visibility and safety for visitors after dark
- Illuminate pathways and parking areas without overwhelming the structure
- Maintain a respectful appearance appropriate for a historic landmark
- Ensure educational and historical elements remained visible during evening hours
Because the property serves as both a historical destination and community asset, every lighting decision needed to support the visitor experience while preserving the character of the site.

The Lighting Solution
McKay Landscape Lighting developed a custom architectural lighting plan designed to accentuate the building’s most distinctive features while providing practical illumination throughout the grounds.
Carefully positioned fixtures were used to:
- Wash the historic facade with warm, balanced light
- Draw attention to architectural details that disappear after sunset
- Create safe, welcoming pedestrian routes
- Increase visibility around gathering and parking areas
- Illuminate the site’s historic marker and educational displays
The design emphasizes subtlety rather than brightness, allowing the architecture to remain the focal point while creating a warm and inviting nighttime presence.

Historic Preservation Considerations
Lighting a historic structure requires a different approach than illuminating a modern commercial building.
Every aspect of the installation was planned with respect for the property’s historical significance. Fixture placement, beam angles, and light levels were carefully selected to enhance the architecture without distracting from it. The goal was not to transform the building, but to reveal its beauty after dark in a way that feels natural and timeless.
The Result
Today, visitors arriving at the Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center experience a property that remains visually striking long after sunset. The lighting system improves safety, highlights important architectural features, and helps tell the story of a building that holds tremendous cultural and historical significance. If you would like to visit the center, find hours and more information on their website.
