McKay recently installed a unique project in Des Moines, IA. The project included lighting a healing garden at Iowa Methodist Cancer Center that would allow patients and family members to enjoy the area after dark. Too often, these gardens are bombarded with high powered commercial lights. These lights create glare and create an undesirable look at night. McKay uses low-voltage lighting to create a soft light on the garden area that will create a soft glow making the garden look tremendous at night.
The manager particularly was looking for colored lighting that would bring some unique flare to the area. To accomplish this request, the use of colored lenses was employed. A 13" hand-blown glass sphere (pictured) was used to add another level of color and flare that is also visible during the day. The use of underwater landscape lighting was also used to add a special touch to the area around a waterfall area near the garden.
There was an existing landscape lighting system that was installed on the grounds before we began our installation. Unfortunately, there were a number of problems with the system. The system was installed with incorrect wiring and the transformers were incorrectly installed. It was clear that the landscape lighting system was not installed by a company dedicated to low-voltage lighting like McKay.
McKay's finished the Des Moines project lighting dark areas around the garden and making it much safer to walk around the area at night. Of course it made the area safer by deterring trespassers but also made the paths easier to walk and gave the garden a special glow at night. The manager and residents were very pleased with the finished product. Our designer made the property glow at night but also added some specially-requested flair with colored lenses and the hand-blown glass sphere.
