There’s nothing quite like driving up to a warm, welcoming home with the prettiest Nebraska sunset peeking through the trees in the backdrop. This gorgeous new home is nestled in a serene location outside of Omaha, surrounded by the wonders of nature and picturesque views.
The Residential Landscape Lighting Design: Highlighting Architectural Features and Increasing Overall Security
The home’s lovely natural stone and decorative corbel peaks are just some of its timeless characteristics that we wanted to highlight at night.
Our designers worked with the homeowner, home builder, and landscaper while creating this outdoor lighting design. Thoughtful fixture placement at the base of the home lets the light gently crawl up the stonework and creates interesting shadows while evenly illuminating the front peaks.
Andrew "A.J." Coleman, outdoor lighting designer, mentioned soffit lights would have given the home a completely different look, “You wouldn’t have been able to see the corbel features at night.”
Besides highlighting the homes prominent architectural details, we wanted to increase its overall security. A few path lights elegantly illuminate the walkway and help safely guide visitors, friends, and family from the driveway to the front door. Adding a little ambient light in the yard gives balance and increases security.
The garage is off to the side and not visible from the front door. Without light, the garage would be very dark and would have left the homeowners open to vulnerabilities in security. Several well lights effectively brighten up the area, providing a comprehensive lighting design to the entire home.
The different layers of light around the home help create a warm and inviting ambiance while deterring potential intruders.
“We live in a remote area with very little light at night so adding landscape lighting really made a huge difference for us," the homeowner said. "It makes our home more welcoming and it just looks so beautiful when we come home in the evening. When we are out back, the light defines the space in the yard and makes it more usable and enjoyable at night. Instead of it being pitch black, we can sit and enjoy all the beautiful trees lit up.”
To make the backyard more functional and secure at night, we lit some of the trees, installed path lights around their fire feature and hot tub, and illuminated the walkout on the lower level. A.J. added, "Highlighting the weeping willows in the distance gives the homeowners a nice backdrop while they are sitting on the deck or lower level.”
