Today's LED landscape lighting technology offers beautiful lighting options coupled with energy savings and bulb longevity.

But that wasn't always the case. Several years ago, LED lighting was inconsistent and resulted in poor color quality. As technology continually changes, so has LED technology, and now it's more reliable and becoming the preferred choice. In fact, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a halogen and LED outdoor lighting system.

The big difference between the two is the bulb technology. With incandescent and halogen bulbs, a piece of wire known as the filament is heated by electricity to a point where it glows and creates light. LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode and an electronic device emits the light when an electrical current travels through it.

LED uses a fraction (15-20%) of the electricity used with halogen or incandescent bulbs. To put it into perspective, imagine your electric bill is $100 per month using strictly traditional outdoor lighting. A switch to LED could reduce that to as little as $15.

LED Landscape Lighting Benefits:

  • High Efficiency: Up to about 85% less energy, sometimes more.
  • Enhanced Lighting Effect: Better illumination plus the ability to control the beam spread of the lamps.
  • Longer Bulb Life: Most LED bulbs have 50,000 hours or a 5-year warranty. Whereas, most halogen bulbs have 5,000 hours.
  • Savings: Over time, the energy savings will pay for the upfront investment.

Landscape Lighting Trends:

According to the 2016 Houzz Landscaping & Garden Trends Study, 57% of homeowners upgrading their outdoor space also update the lighting during their project. Of those homeowners, 32% opt for LED, which is growing in popularity (up 28% from last year). Lighting to illuminate features and create ambiance (79%) ranked the most popular along with creating a relaxing and enjoyable space (64%) followed by safety, curb appeal and security (52%, 49%, and 32%, respectively).

The federal government passed a law decreeing that lightbulbs must be more efficient by 2020. Currently LED and compact fluorescent bulbs meet these standards. We can only predict that halogen bulbs will be much more difficult to find as manufactures stop producing and selling them.

LED Outdoor Lighting Costs:

The initial investment with LED may be higher than the traditional halogen system. However, over time you will save money with LED lighting.

If you currently have a halogen landscape lighting system, McKay Lighting offers free LED conversion assessments. Converting from halogen to LED can be relatively simple based on the age of your present fixtures. During an assessment, one of our designers will visit your property to assess your current system. Then, the designer will develop and present a plan for converting to LED.
