Lighting a New Construction Acreage: Transitional Farmhouse Landscape Lighting in Elkhorn, Nebraska

Client Goal: Create a Complete Nighttime Experience for a New Construction Home

For this newly built transitional farmhouse acreage in Elkhorn, Nebraska, the goal was to create a lighting design that felt as intentional and refined as the home itself. With a long driveway, expansive architecture, outdoor living areas, pool space, garage zones, and surrounding landscape, this property needed more than a few lights near the front door.

The homeowners wanted the entire property to feel welcoming, functional, and beautifully finished after dark. From the first moment guests arrived at the drive to evenings spent around the pool and patio, the lighting needed to support the way the home would be lived in, entertained in, and enjoyed.

The Primary Challenge: Lighting a Large Property Without Overdoing It

Acreage properties offer incredible opportunities for lighting, but they also require restraint. With a home of this scale, it can be tempting to light everything. The challenge is creating enough visibility, drama, and warmth without making the property feel overly bright or commercial.

For this project, the lighting design needed to balance several important areas:

  • The long driveway and arrival sequence needed subtle guidance for guests.
  • The architecture of the home needed soft, balanced illumination to highlight its clean transitional farmhouse style.
  • The garage and motor court areas needed functional lighting that still felt elegant.
  • The backyard, pool, pergola, and hardscape areas needed to feel comfortable and usable after dark.

Because this was a new construction home, it was also important to think through the property as a whole, not just as separate lighting zones. The end result needed to feel cohesive from front to back.

The Design Approach: Layered Lighting from Arrival to Outdoor Living

McKay Landscape Lighting approached this project with a layered design that gently guides the eye through the property.

Along the driveway, bollard lighting creates a polished arrival experience while helping guests navigate the long drive. Rather than overpowering the landscape, the lighting adds rhythm and structure, making the entrance feel intentional and inviting.

Architectural lighting was used to enhance the home’s exterior and bring out the beauty of the farmhouse design after dark. Soft uplighting and carefully placed fixtures help define the home’s shape, highlight key architectural features, and give the exterior a warm, elegant presence at night.

Around the garage and driveway areas, lighting adds both function and curb appeal. These are high-use areas on an acreage property, so the lighting needed to improve visibility while still matching the refined look of the home.

In the backyard, the lighting extends the use of the pool, pergola, hardscape, and outdoor living areas well into the evening. By softly illuminating gathering spaces, steps, planting areas, and surrounding features, the backyard becomes more than a daytime space. It becomes an outdoor retreat.

The Final Outcome: A New Construction Home That Feels Finished After Dark

The completed lighting design gives this transitional farmhouse acreage a sense of warmth, scale, and sophistication at night.

The driveway feels welcoming. The architecture feels elevated. The garage and motor court areas feel practical without looking harsh. The pool and outdoor living spaces feel comfortable, usable, and inviting after dark.

Most importantly, the lighting helps the entire property feel complete. For a new construction home, landscape lighting is one of the finishing details that transforms a beautiful house into a fully realized property.

This project is a strong example of how thoughtful lighting can enhance not only the look of a home, but the way the entire property is experienced.

Why Lighting Matters on New Construction Homes

New construction is one of the best times to think about outdoor lighting because the design can be considered alongside the driveway, hardscapes, landscaping, pool, and outdoor living areas. When planned early  the final system feels more seamless, functional, and intentional — not like an afterthought added once the home is complete.

For acreage homes especially, lighting plays an important role in arrival, safety, architecture, outdoor entertaining, and long-term curb appeal. A well-designed system helps the home feel welcoming from the road, beautiful from every angle, and comfortable for everyday living.

At McKay Landscape Lighting, our goal is always to create lighting that looks timeless, feels natural, and enhances the property without overpowering it.
