McKay Landscape Lighting had the opportunity to present on landscape lighting design and applications at ENGAGE, the AIA South Dakota Convention on September 11, 2015.  The annual event brings architects and other design professionals together to learn, share ideas, and meet each other while taking their CEU educational sessions, networking events and the AIA South Dakota Exhibit Expo.

Here's an overview of the presentation topics:

  • A Brief History of Landscape Lighting Systems
  • Compare LED and Halogen Lighting Systems
  • Landscape Lighting System Components
  • The Role Lighting Plays in Overall Site Design
  • Actual Project Application Pictorials

The history of landscape lighting is interesting as the first fixtures were created using tractor head lights in coffee cans and hooking them up with a 12-volt battery. Today, fixtures are smaller, sleeker, made with strong high-grade metals, and designed to be aesthetically pleasing. Just over the past 5 years, outdoor lighting technology has changed vastly. LED lighting systems are the wave of the future allowing 80% less energy with 2 to 12 watts, varying color temperatures, 10x longer lamp life, and beam spreads varying from 15 to 100 degrees. In the presentation, we went into more detail comparing halogen and LED lighting systems and their components.

It’s easy to talk about lighting systems and the impact they make on the design aesthetic of a residence or building, it's another to be able to actually see it. Jerry McKay, owner of McKay Landscape Lighting, and AJ, outdoor lighting designer, presented case studies of actual landscape lighting applications, and discussed the technical information about each project. They showed different types of lighting systems that when combined with architectural lighting and site lighting, will add night time appeal, security and safety.
