This summer McKay Lighting provided some very unique special event lighting on Mutual of Omaha's campus in Omaha. As a sponsor of the 2012 Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, provided this unique sculpture to commemorate the big event in Omaha. McKay Lighting was specially invited to bring the project to life at night, and the project presented some unique challenges for our lighting designers.
Providing light to every part of the sculpture proved a challenge but McKay designers were able to make the sculpture look really great at night. The finished product was one of the most unique projects McKay has completed. The designers, installers and Mutual of Omaha were all happy with the finished product. It was only a small part of the unique experience that Mutual of Omaha brought for the area for the trials but the sculpture still stood out as a unique experience to those passing by.
The use of low voltage lighting was the difference that made this sculpture look great at night. Instead of using overbearing high-voltage commercial lighting, McKay used low-voltage bulbs to provide a softer light that created a tremendous effect at night. Too often we see a sculpture that looks great during the day but when large, bulky lights are used on the sculpture, glares can easily appear and the light can engulf it, detracting from the beauty of the details of the work.
Instead of an overbearing light on the sculpture, McKay was able to use fixtures that created a soft light on the sculpture that gently lit all of the details of the swimmer. The low voltage lighting created unique shadows that gave the swimmer an even more lifelike look at night. Special care was taken to avoid any glares from the lights and to make sure the sculpture looked great at night.
By providing uplighting all around the sculpture, McKay was able to light the sculpture and show off the detailed work of the talented sculptor who created the swimmer. We hope that you were able to see this unique piece of art when it was Omaha. We were proud to support Mutual of Omaha and the Olympic Trials when they were in Omaha.
