Omaha Lighting Design: Resort-Style Outdoor Space

Written by McKay Lighting | 10/14/2016

About a year ago the homeowners of this newly constructed outdoor space started planning the backyard of their dreams. The initial backyard renovations included an in-ground pool the whole family could enjoy and outdoor lighting to extend and enhance their enjoyment into the evening hours.

Before work began, the homeowners started laying out the plans to make their vision a reality. They met with the contractors involved in the project, which included a pool, landscape lighting, and landscaping. The scope of the project required the companies to coordinate timelines and schedules so various parts of the project could be completed as efficiently as possible. For example, our team at McKay Lighting needed to install the wires for the lighting system prior to the concrete pouring, and as the steps and pergola were being constructed.

Working with the homeowners to create an outdoor space they could experience throughout every season was something we enjoyed being a part of. All the design elements come together so nicely. We're excited to share the backyard transformation of their cozy, resort-style outdoor space below:

The pergola and outdoor fireplace were not in the original plan; however, it creates a cozy space that can be enjoyed any hour of the day. The lighting was strategically placed to accentuate the architecture of the outdoor structure while providing function.

When lighting an outdoor space, we consider how the homeowner uses the space, how to bring out the natural beauty, as well as the security and safety of the area.  This step lighting technique is one of our signature techniques for lighting steps. The fixtures go unnoticed during the day, yet provide enough light to improve night-time safety.

The pool has a slide that is built around the grotto with the steps leading to the slide behind it. The area around the steps was dark and a potential hazard for trips and falls. McKay Lighting installed custom fixtures onto prominent posts of the deck. The fixtures have a relatively large spread and provide light close to the ground that signals the railing and stair location. A few uplights accentuate the large trees in the backdrop and path lights also increase the safety of this area.

McKay Lighting installed the lighting around the front of the home about eight years ago. Included in the landscape lighting design was a plan to upgrade the front of the home to LED. There isn't much of a difference in how the front of the home looks, except the LED bulbs are a little brighter and will conserve energy and has a longer bulb life.
