Outdoor Security Lighting: Protection for your Home

Written by McKay Lighting | 04/20/2018

When most people think of outdoor security lighting, they automatically picture harsh floodlights, blinding motion detectors, and other high-power measures that suppress and distract from the home's natural beauty.

Outdoor security lighting doesn’t need to be harsh and startling to be effective. Professionally installed low-voltage landscape lighting softly illuminates and elegantly enhances your home and property while protecting you and your family.

For over the past 15 years, we've been fortunate to work with some of the region's top security professionals to elegantly illuminate Omaha’s most elite homes and properties. The knowledge we've gained has allowed us to think differently when lighting for security.

When lighting for security, we'll carefully assess what we refer to as the three rings of protection. We want to provide adequate light that eliminates any dark areas an intruder might hide within these three areas:

Light directly on the house:

Illuminating entry points, like the front entrance, side doors, lower windows, and garage, will allow you to see who’s coming and going, and make it difficult for an intruder to gain access. Up-lighting the home's columns or other architectural features will brighten dark entries and enhance its beauty.

Lighting the yard and areas close to the home:

Such as dark walkways and paths, landscaping, outdoor living areas, and outdoor structures. Some ambient light in the yard gives a more comprehensive look while eliminating dark areas.

Lighting the perimeter of your property:

If you have lots of trees or a wooded area where someone could potentially hide, illuminating those areas will give you peace of mind.

Essentially, strategically lighting each ring adds another level of protection and makes it more difficult for an intruder to get onto your property and access your home unseen. Usually, thieves choose an easy target, and a house that is well lit deters unwelcome intruders.

To recap, strategically lighting your home, the areas surrounding your home and yard, and the perimeter of your property, makes it more difficult for a potential intruder to get onto your property and into your home. Professional low-voltage landscape lighting elegantly enhances your home's natural beauty while providing an elevated level of security for you and your family.

Using more than one lighting technique within these three rings creates different layers of light. Lighting in layers not only adds beauty and interest, but it allows us to create multiple "zones" of light. Let’s say, as an example, you have a security zone that stays on from dusk until dawn, while an entertainment zone that provides less security turns off earlier.
