Tucked into a secluded development outside of Omaha, Nebraska you’ll find this stylish modern mountain home. The landscape lighting design elegantly enhances the grand architectural features while providing nighttime security and safety.
Andrew "A.J." Coleman, an outdoor lighting designer at McKay Lighting, worked with Ken Oster Homes on the project. “The whole idea was to balance the soffit lighting and low voltage landscape lighting. At the same time, we wanted to emphasize the beautiful stonework and architectural features of the home and landscaping, all while increasing the security and safety,” said Coleman.
The uplighting along the foundation illuminates the peaks and columns of the home. The light gently crawls up the intricate stone detailing to create unique and intriguing shadows, adding curb appeal and interest. We strategically placed the fixtures to create balance with the soffit lighting along the roofline.
We also installed path lights along the front entrance walkway to help safely guide guests coming and going. The uplights on the trees provide ambient light in the yard.
Placing lights on either side of the porch elegantly illuminate the stonework and wood detailing while marking the front entry at the same time.
The home has a front and side load garage. This area isn't noticeable from the front of the house or inside of the home but becomes the main focal point when you enter into the driveway. Outdoor garage security lighting was important to the homeowners. The garage lighting also provides a comprehensive overall look and creates balance with the rest of the house.
Lighting dark entry points, like a garage, front door, or anywhere people are coming and going, will help increase security and visibility. Here, the garage lighting helps deter any unwanted people from lingering or entering.
There are three well lights in the concrete on either side of the garage doors. This technique effectively brightens the area and increases security without the need for coach lights on the facade.
Before pouring the concrete, our team installed sleeving for the wire. They later returned to core drill the holes, mount fixtures, and make connections. We coordinated with the builder and other contractors to time the garage lighting installation.
The gate lighting provides the property with an extra level of security. The two well lights in the turfgrass help accent the stone and brick columns, make the address more noticeable and create ambient light.
This narrow walkway leads you from the driveway to the backyard entertainment area. Since it is a tight space with limited room, we didn’t want to use path lights or anything that would make it difficult or become a hazard for those using this walkway.
These wall lights sit flush with the stone and effectively spread light down and out to light the path. We installed a light at each step tread to help note each elevation change.
To install these lights, our team carefully core drilled and sanded an area on the stone. Then they drilled a tiny hole through the wall and made the connection on the other side.
We have more cascade lights on the wall leading to the lower patio and fire feature (not visible in the photo). The lighting at the base of the tree creates ambient light to help with visibility when the fire feature is off. It also provides a nice backdrop when the homeowners are looking out from the patio or deck.
