LED landscape lighting has become the preferred choice among homeowners and professionals for several reasons. For those of you who have a halogen lighting system, you might want to start thinking about the transition to LED because it will become unavoidable very soon.
The article, “Why you should switch to LED lightbulbs right now, before the law requires it” published by The Washington Post on January 18, 2018, says the federal government passed a regulation that lightbulbs must be three times more efficient by the year 2020.
The state of California decided to accelerate this change.
"Starting this New Year's Day, California retailers must exhaust their supply of incandescents and then sell only bulbs that meet the new standard, which means LEDs and compact fluorescent lightbulbs. The rest of the nation will follow in two years."
Halogen bulbs are considered part of the incandescent family. Even though halogen bulbs are more efficient than incandescent, they are not nearly as efficient as LED. As mentioned above, LED and compact fluorescent bulbs meet the new standard.
Some of our manufacturers have already discontinued carrying halogen bulbs. It's safe to assume over the next few years it will be more difficult and expensive to buy halogen bulbs. We went through a similar process with incandescent holiday lights. Each year it became hard to find manufacturers that carried them and replacement parts.
