Although LED bulbs have a longer life and more advanced technology than halogen bulbs, an LED landscape lighting system still needs a little TLC. Our service team shares why regular maintenance is the best way to give your LED system the tender, love, and care that it deserves.
In the past five years, we have seen an increase in LED technologies available in the landscape lighting industry. Every new installation now uses LED bulbs instead of halogen bulbs. And for a good reason, LED bulbs are designed to last longer, run cooler, and use less energy than older halogen technologies.
So the question remains… if LED bulbs last longer, do you need regular maintenance service?
We asked one of our service technicians who sees and maintains outdoor lighting systems every day. His answer was yes, all lighting systems, including LED, should receive preventive maintenance service at least once a year or more if you have a larger property. Here's why:
Bulbs Need Replaced
The main difference in regards to maintaining your lighting system is LED bulbs last 5x longer than halogen bulbs. Halogen bulbs would start to burn out around a year and therefore had to be replaced every year since burned out bulbs can harm your system. While most LED bulbs have a 5-year lifespan, it's still a good idea to regularly check and replace any faulty or burned out bulbs. If you're in our annual, bi-annual, or quarterly program, we'll automatically inspect and replace any faulty LED bulbs under warranty during your service visit.
Fixture lenses still need to be cleaned
Sprinkler systems and impurities in the rain or snow can lead to mineral buildup on fixture lenses. LED or halogen, lenses should be cleaned regularly. Clean lenses help keep the system looking as good as the day it was first installed.
Fixtures need aligned
Kids, grandchildren, gardeners, landscapers, pets… these are just a few examples of ways a fixture may get knocked out of alignment. During each annual service visit, our technicians make sure that all of your fixtures are aimed and adjusted properly. Sometimes this means moving a fixture to allow for plant or tree growth.
Even though LEDs are rated to last much longer than halogen, the fixtures themselves may still need routine maintenance to keep your system looking great. Yearly adjustments ensure that your lighting system evolves with your landscaping. Our service technicians can answer any questions you have about your current system, and any updates or additions you may be considering. In our experience, it's the small changes that can really make a huge impact.
Newer technologies, like LED landscape lighting, require certain voltages to ensure longevity and maximum efficiency. A poorly made repair of a cut wire could lead to issues in the future due to voltage irregularities. Our trained technicians have the proper skills to ensure high-quality maintenance and repairs are being made to your LED system.
