This peaceful tropical getaway has a serene setting with ocean views, palm trees, and unique plants with vibrant colors. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind. Our team flew here almost six years ago to install landscape lighting at this stunning vacation home in Maui, Hawaii. It's still one of our most unique and memorable projects.
The landscape lighting design:
Maui provides wonderful stargazing opportunities. The lighting design includes strategically created lighting zones and layers. It allows the homeowners to turn sections of their lights off when they want to enjoy the views and gaze up at the stars. And when they need light again, they can easily turn them back on.
Lighting Maui Foliage & Landscape
Various types of unique plants with heavily dense foliage surround the palm trees on the property. We anticipated a few challenges since the landscaping is different from what we are used to in the Midwest. Telescoping and standard risers helped us illuminate the palm trees in areas with dense foliage that otherwise would block light from reaching the canopy.
The garden has a tree with a flat canopy covering about 20 feet. To highlight the foliage with this type of breadth, we installed spotlights from different angles.
At McKay Lighting, we will often select a color temperature that will best compliment the property. Here we used LED bulbs with a pure white temperature to accentuate the lighter green palms. LED offers more versatile color temperatures such as pure white, cooler light, or a more traditional warm white.
Water Fall Feature Lighting
To illuminate the unique water feature near the front of the home, we installed two underwater lights. One is located at the base to emphasize the pond space, and the other one is directly under the falls. We positioned the fixtures to contain the light on the water feature and avoid glare on the walkway and front door. Path lights illuminate the stepping stones leading to the outdoor living space in the backyard.
Landscape & Palm Trees Lighting
Rows of palm trees line the drive. We installed lights on every other tree trunk using a broader beam to showcase the palms. There are also uplights to accentuate the trunk and canopy of the mango trees in the background. We have some path lights to illuminate the walkway leading to the greenhouse where the orchards grow.
Before returning to Nebraska, our team trained the house manager on the lighting system. They covered everything from how it worked and maintenance requirements to how to reorder and change bulbs. They also enjoyed exploring the island on their days off. They shared what it was like to install landscape lighting in Maui, Hawaii.
