This peaceful tropical getaway has a serene setting with ocean views, palm trees, and unique plants with vibrant colors. It's the perfect place to relax and unwind. Our team flew here, a stunning vacation home located in Maui, Hawaii, to install landscape lights almost five years ago. It's still one of our most unique and memorable projects.
Maui is also a great place for stargazing. The lighting design includes strategically created zones and layers of light. This allows the homeowners to turn sections of their lights off when they want to enjoy the views and gaze up at the stars. Then when they need light again, they can easily turn them back on.
The property has palm trees surrounded by various types of unique plants with heavily dense foliage. We anticipated a few challenges since it is different from what we are used to in the Midwest. Telescoping and standard risers helped us illuminate the palm trees in areas with dense foliage that otherwise would block light from reaching the canopy.
In the background, behind the palm trees, there is a tree about two feet tall with a flat canopy covering about 20 feet. To highlight the canopy of a tree with this type of breadth, we installed spots at different angles in the garden.
At McKay Lighting, we often use color temperatures that will best compliment the property. Here we used LED bulbs with a pure white temperature to accentuate the lighter green palms. LED offers more versatile color temperatures such as pure white, cooler light, or a more traditional warm white.
Two underwater lights, one at the base accenting the pond space and another one directly under the falls, illuminate the unique water feature near the front of the home. The fixtures are positioned to contain the light on the water feature and keep light away from the walkway and door, avoiding glare. Path lights illuminate the stepping stones leading to the outdoor living space in the backyard.
Alongside the drive are rows of palm trees. We illuminated every other trunk with a wider beam to highlight the palms. The mango trees in the background have two up lights at the base to shine on the trunks and canopy. Path lights illuminate the walkway leading to the greenhouse where the orchards grow.
In a previous post, our team shared what it was like installing a landscape lighting project in Maui, Hawaii. Before leaving, they also trained the house manager on how to maintain the lighting system and developed a system to reorder bulbs.
